Again, I drove yesterday due to extenuating circumstances regarding hauling a large item. Perhaps I'm exaggerating. I could have taken the bus, but it would have been sketchy as to whether or not I'd get back with the large item. It's so frustrating. The longer I ride the bus, the more I realize that it isn't the answer for all your transportation needs which tends to make me believe that we are not supposed to travel large distances in general. Our ability to travel is a complete aberration of the human condition. If you can't get there on a horse or a horse-drawn carriage, it should probably be considered "too far" to interact with. Even the horse-drawn carriage is pushing it. It uses the wheel technology which, at this point could be defined as a weapon of mass destruction if you really think about it. I mean look, once the wheel was born, they had to find a way to make it spin faster, which led to people power, which led to horse power, which led to coal and steam, which lead to gas and diesel which led to... Oh yeah, what? Electric? Hydrogen? Corn? Or is it back to horse-drawn carriages? We'd be lucky to be able to get back to a horse-drawn carriage in my opinion but i don't think folks these days will take kindly to having another mouth to feed and a big one at that. (Read my other wheel discussion.)
I'm surprised the Amish use carriages. Do you think there was a big discussion as to whether or not to allow the wheel into their society? Do you think the old-school Amish perhaps said it was a tool of the Devil and would drive a carnal desire to travel to distant places to find exotic things and people? Oh check this out, I saw this while waiting to get my OIL changed for my GAS POWERED vehicle. Wheelbarrow Gardens!
I was reading that the Amish community is starting to grow considerably and they're having trouble with the growth.
Check this out, it may just blow your mind: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315790/ It blew mine.
